Short term complications of diabetes(1)-hypoglycemia
Author:zplhelen | Time: 2009-7-28 14:37:10Diabetes is mared by high blood glucose. But the biggest problem is the abnormal fluctuate of of blood glucose levels. Too high or low glucose is neither good for health. Everyone responds a little differently to changes in their blood glucose levels, so it's important for you to know what's "normal" for you, so you can look for signs that you're not feeling your best, and take action if necessary.
The serious complication is hypoglycemia, which is also called a silent symptom. The causes of hypoglycemia include too much exercise or activity than usual, insulin or oral medication, too muchirregular meals(kkipping or delaying meals or snacks, or eating less food than usual). Some old people may experience hypolycemia at night during sleep.
When you have the following feelings, hypoglycemia should be suspected and blood glucose should be tested: confusion/disorientation, hunger, slurred speech, headache, sweating, tingling lips, rapid heart beat, weakness, nervousness, coma, and tremors. Some individuals may have unique manifestations.
When hypoglycemia happens, the first is to eat glucose, in liquid and easily absorbted form, such as candy and juice. Then test your blood glucose again 10-15 minutes later. If your blood glucose level has not risen, repeat glucose intake as above. In either case, if next meal is more than one hour a way, follow the above treatment with something more substantial, such as starch and meat. (Eating food with the first glucose dose can delay the blood glucose rise.)
It is important to know the treatment for low blood glucose should not take the place of a snack or meal.
